Therapy · Areas of application

Many fields,one starting point.

Breathing, swallowing and head balance stand at the start of many causal chains. This is exactly where FaceFormer therapy comes in, as a neurophysiological causal therapy. That is why it is used in very different specialities, in speech therapy as well as in sleep medicine.

Many complaints can be connected with the triad.

FaceFormer training aims to restore the physiological setting of breathing, swallowing and head balance, with mouth closure and the tongue reference position. In doing so, it creates the conditions under which complaints can improve. How far this succeeds in the individual case depends on many factors.

Areas of application

Where the therapy is used

The grouping follows the FaceFormer exercise instructions. Linked topics are explained in separate articles on faceformer.de.

Swallowing

Mouth, tongue and swallowing

  • Swallowing disorders
  • Tongue dysfunctions
  • Impaired chewing function
  • Functionally caused language, speech and fluency disorders
  • Giving up dummies and thumb-sucking
  • Paralysis of the mouth or face, for example after a stroke

In cases of sleep apnoea, sudden hearing loss, tinnitus, vertigo and paralysis, a medical assessment should come first.

Why so many fields

From the symptom to the level of causes

Breathing, swallowing and head balance supply the body with oxygen and food and keep it balanced in space. If one of these patterns deviates, the body compensates, often for years. Where this shows up at the end of the causal chain varies greatly, for example in the jaw, in the ear, in sleep or in the neck.

Each of these complaints has its own specialty with its own procedures, and they have their place. FaceFormer therapy complements them at the beginning of the chain, at the shared control pattern. Dr. Berndsen calls this a return to the reference order.

How the training goes about this is shown in the article How does FaceFormer therapy work, and the process in everyday life is described in FaceFormer therapy step by step.

Questions

Frequently asked

Is the FaceFormer an option for my complaints?

There is no general answer to that. How closely your complaints are connected with breathing, swallowing and head balance can be shown by an assessment in a practice. You can find practices near you in the practitioner directory.

Does the training replace medical treatment?

No, it complements it. Please do not stop medically prescribed treatments such as a splint, a breathing therapy device or braces on your own.

My topic is not in the overview

The overview follows the exercise instructions. If in doubt, ask your practice or call us on +49 2303 89991. You can read what the FaceFormer is under What is the FaceFormer.
