In short

Both models are intended for adults and children alike. They differ only in the firmness of the material.
Just starting out? Begin with the ZERO and switch to the ONE after about eight weeks.
Been training for a while? The ONE is your device for daytime use.
At night? Always the ZERO, regardless of how long you have been practising.
Child up to 10 years? The ZERO throughout.
Everything at once? The set contains both devices and costs less than buying them separately.

There is only one size: ZERO and ONE are identically shaped and the same size, including for children. The device itself is yellow for the ZERO and transparent or blue for the ONE. The colour you choose in the shop refers to the hygiene box included.

FaceFormer training for teenagers and adults

The training follows a set sequence. You start with the softer ZERO, get your mouth and tongue used to the new movement and, after about eight weeks, switch to the firmer ONE during the day. At night, the ZERO remains the more comfortable choice for the entire duration of therapy.

The four phases

Phase TimeframeWhat happens
Getting used to it Weeks 1 to 2 ZERO, short sessions several times a day. The basic exercise becomes second nature.
Building up Weeks 3 to 8 Pulling exercises are added; wearing it at night becomes routine.
Strength From week 8 Switch to the ONE during the day. The ZERO stays for the night.
Stabilisation From month 6 The functions work on their own. Reduce training to maintain the results.

What you need

Instruction and support

You don't have to piece the training together yourself. These formats show the exercises step by step and answer the questions that come up in everyday life.

Useful additions

The exercises on video

Seeing is easier than reading. These videos show how to do the exercises and the mistakes that happen most often.

The most common mistake

Not sticking with it long enough. The muscles need weeks to adopt a new movement pattern. If you stop after two weeks, you've got through the adjustment phase but missed out on the effect. Plan for six to twelve months from the start.

FaceFormer training with children

For children up to and including ten years of age, the softer ZERO is used throughout, including at night. Switching to the firmer ONE only becomes an option in adolescence. What matters is not how long the exercises last but how regularly they are done: better three times a day for five minutes than once for half an hour.

The course of therapy for children

Phase PeriodWhat matters
Getting to know it Weeks 1 to 2 A playful approach, short sessions, no pressure. Parents practise along.
Routine Weeks 3 to 8 Build fixed times into the daily routine. The success book and stickers help.
Night from week 4 to 8 Add wearing at night as soon as the child feels confident.
Keeping it up 6 to 12 months Until nasal breathing and correct swallowing come naturally.

Ready-made sets for children's training

Individually: device and motivational aids

Knowledge for parents

The same questions always come up when training with children: How do I motivate my child? What if they take the FaceFormer out at night? These formats answer them.

Join in: the exercise videos for children

These two videos guide your child through the basic and pulling exercises. Simply press play and join in together – this replaces counting and turns the session into a regular ritual.

When you should seek professional support

In the case of pronounced speech difficulties, severe mouth breathing with enlarged tonsils or orthodontic treatment that is already under way, the training belongs in professional hands. The practitioner directory lists only practitioners who have learned the method in a FaceFormer seminar and are certified.

Areas of application

The FaceFormer trains the lip, tongue and pharyngeal muscles and thus the functions of breathing, swallowing and head posture. Because these functions are interconnected, the training has an effect on complaints that, at first glance, have little to do with one another. For each area, you will find expert articles and videos here to help you get started.

Jaw, teeth and CMD

Jaw joint complaints, teeth grinding, splint therapy, relapse after braces

Why the splint does not change the pattern
Why the splint does not change the patternThe splint protects the teeth from wear. The movement pattern that creates the pressure remains unaffected. That is exactly where the training comes in.
Jaw and head posture
Jaw and head postureAccording to the functional model, the jaw joint, tongue position and head balance form a unit. A dysfunction in one affects the others.

Ears

Tinnitus, ear noises, pressure in the ears, problems equalising pressure

Headaches and migraine

Cervicogenic headache, migraine, trigeminal pain

Tongue, swallowing and speech

Swallowing disorders, incorrect swallowing pattern, tongue reference position, lisping, myofunctional disorders

Head, neck and posture

Neck and back pain, tension, head balance, pelvic floor

The head-balancing muscles
The head-balancing musclesThe head weighs four to six kilograms. How it is carried depends on muscle chains that extend into the tongue and trunk.
The chain down to the pelvic floor
The chain down to the pelvic floorAccording to the functional model, the pattern does not end at the neck but continues via the diaphragm and trunk down into the pelvic floor.

Dizziness

Persistent or recurring dizziness without a clear diagnosis

Face: paralysis, asymmetry and shape

Facial palsy, facial asymmetry, receding chin, double chin, lip shape

The YouTube channel Dr. Berndsen Medical contains more than 300 further videos on diagnostics, exercises and medical conditions.

Important note

FaceFormer therapy does not replace a medical assessment. If your symptoms persist, please speak to your doctor. You can find FaceFormer-certified practitioners in the practitioner directory.

How the training works

The training does not target a single muscle, but a movement pattern. Nasal breathing, swallowing and head posture are interlinked. If one of these functions changes, the others change with it. This is exactly what the training aims at.

Breathing
BreathingThe way back to nasal breathing. The nose filters, humidifies and warms the air. Mouth breathing bypasses all of this.
Swallowing
SwallowingAround 2,000 times a day. An incorrect pattern has an effect just as often, and so does a corrected one.
Head posture
Head postureThe third axis of the pattern. Tongue position and head balance are directly connected.

Where the tongue rests plays a part

The tongue reference position
The tongue reference positionAgainst the palate, not on the floor of the mouth. From this position, swallowing and nasal breathing take place physiologically.
The basic exercise
The basic exerciseThe device sits between the lips and teeth. The pull activates the entire muscle chain.
Down into the trunk
Down into the trunkThe muscle chains do not end at the neck. According to the functional model, the pattern has an effect down to the diaphragm and pelvic floor.

The exercises: how it's done

For practices and clinics

The documented history makes visible the patient's cooperation, which would otherwise go unobserved between appointments. Therapists can see whether the exercises have been carried out regularly and correctly, and can tailor the therapy accordingly instead of guessing. With children, the history also helps in conversations with parents.
